A few years ago the political mantra was “It’s the economy, stupid!” It was just another false narrative to describe what is wrong in America. The fact is, the economy always ebbs and flows. That is not the problem! When society is made up of strong families, the impact of recession or depression is not devastating. We can weather the storms that inevitably come. It is the family that is the foundation of the American life, not the economy.

A traditional family of father, mother and child is like a three-legged stool that is stable but when one leg is missing, it is impossible to balance the needs with the resources. When it is a single parent family they make up 68% of the poor families in America; lack of supervision and discipline for children insures lack of respect and appreciation for the rights and property of others; dependence on the family is transferred to the government; and good order and morals go out the window. The result is exactly what we are experiencing in America today – a lawless, lazy and lethargic society. Just as a two parent family weathers the storms of life, a country that is replete with intact families will survive and thrive in adversity. The economy is always temporary so the family cannot be.

The family is God’s answer to procreation and abundant living. Without two parent families we will cease to exist as a civilization. We are on the precipice now and it is imperative that we rebuild the foundation and not just give lip service to it. There are no self help or welfare programs that can fix this problem – only a return to the God ordained traditional family. Just as Nehemiah rebuilt the walls around Jerusalem to protect it from its enemies, so we must rebuild the core of America’s strength – its families. To blame the economy, begs the question of why we are being overrun by depravity, self-indulgence and evil works. As the family goes, so goes the Nation.
